Staying Motivated This Semester

When it comes to school work my motivation is usually the first thing to go. I convince myself that there are about a thousand other things I could be doing besides reading that giant complete works of Shakespeare book sitting on my dresser. I could be reading a book I might actually like, for example. Or binge watching a show on Netflix that might (but probably won't) enrich my life in some way. I could even spend time making a list, such as this, of other things I could be doing besides homework and believe me it would go on and on. But unfortunately as a college student that just doesn't cut it. We have no choice but to read the assigned textbooks for the classes with teachers who think their lectures are all more important than the next. I wish I could say that the longer you're in school the easier it gets to get that motivation going, but that really isn't always the case. Here are some things that I do to help me stay motivated when it comes to school work.

1:: Make the most out of your situation. I try to remember that it's not going to last forever, and that I'm the one paying to be there. It's not like high school where you're forced to go and you don't get to take specific classes that interest you. I chose my own schedule for every semester, I'm paying for each credit and what I get from the class is entirely up to me. If I choose not to do the work, it doesn't affect anyone else and it's important to remember that in college especially you get out what you put in, so make your time (and money) worth while by paying attention and doing your work.

2:: Find your favorite work place. I try to find comfortable places to get my work done. My new favorite is our local library. Something feels so right to me when I have a nice, quiet place to bring all my books. I find a table away from everyone else, bring some headphones and give myself a time limit to finish a few important things. This helps me stay on track and actually get some stuff done.

3:: Set some goals. I like to set goals for myself for the day, week, month and sometimes year. Just hold yourself accountable! If this type of system works for you then just set a couple realistic goals that you can reach. For example each day plan to read a chapter in all of your school books that you have assignments in. The more goals you complete the more you'll want to continue setting them.

4:: Surround yourself with people who have similar goals as you. If you find friends who also want to work on staying motivated on their school work then you'll be more likely to do just that! Work together as a group and hold each other responsible for helping to keep the group on track.

When everything else fails I like to just give into my lack of motivation and go watch Legally Blonde. Usually by the end of the movie I'm convinced that if Elle Woods can go to Harvard Law then I can get some school work done.

Happy Wednesday!
